I used to enjoy putting together these playoff picture posts, trying to figure out which team was better based on the NFL's tiebreaking rules, but these days the NFL does it all so much better. I have been reduced to simply copying their info over. The only advantage is that I will keep the weekly record here so that at the end of the season, we can compare how teams did over the final 7 weeks.
NFC
Week 11 Week 12
1. Atl (9-1) Atl (10-1)
2. SF* (7-2) SF* (8-2)
3. GB (7-3) Chi (8-3)
4. NYG (6-4) NYG (7-4)
5. Chi (7-3) GB (7-4)
6. Sea (6-4) Sea (6-5)
------------ ---------
7. TB (6-4) TB (6-5)
8. Min (6-4) Min (6-5)
AFC
Week 11 Week 12
1. Hou (9-1) Hou (10-1)
2. Bal (8-2) Bal (9-2)
3. NE (7-3) NE (8-3)
4. Den (7-3) Den (8-3)
5. Ind (6-4) Ind (7-4)
6. Pit (6-4) Pit (6-5)
------------ ---------
7. Cin (5-5) Cin (6-5)
Tiebreakers: Seattle and Tampa Bay both beat Minnesota and Seattle takes the final spot due to their better conference record (4-4 vs 3-5).
Pittsburgh won in Cincinnati to take the final spot tiebreaker. Similarly, NE beat Denver back in week 5.
In the AFC, all division leaders have at least a 3-game lead with just 5 games to go. In the NFC, Chicago and Green Bay are just a game apart, but you could have figured that out from the table above.
All in all, not an exciting finish to the season shaping up.
Best,
Sean
