Oklahoma City Barons 3 at Texas Stars 4 (SO) - February 15, 2013

Posted on 03:30 by Unknown

After watching 5 basketball games over 5 days on two different continents, it was time to see some other sports. Surprisingly, the AHL has a solid presence in the south region, with four teams in Oklahoma City, Houston, San Antonio, and Cedar Park, TX. Where is that last one you might wonder? Cedar Park is a city just 20 miles north of Austin, the biggest town in America that I had yet to visit. Fortunately there was a game on Friday night, so I pointed the car due south and drove 6 hours, arriving in plenty of time to see the Texas Stars take on the Oklahoma City Barons.

Cedar Park Center

Located in the middle of nowhere in sprawling Cedar Park, the stadium was opened in 2009 in time for the Stars to move there from Iowa and become the Texas Stars. The CPC is a beautiful facility, rising out of the prairie like a mirage, but if you think it is just a figment of your imagination, the $10 parking charge will quickly bring you back to reality. I think that is a bit much at this level, but the parking lot is huge and can easily handle the traffic.

Tickets range from $11 for the Terrace seats in the upper rows behind each net to $64 for the single row along the glass in the Club. Best bet is probably the Luxury seats at $21 which allow you to sit in one of the offensive zones. If you want to avoid having the glass block your view of the goaltender, row J and above is best.

There is a single spacious concourse with a number of booths and concessions. My recommendation is Smoky Mo's BBQ, where a sliced beef wrap is just $4. The beef is sliced right in front of you (below), something you don't see very often at sporting events. There is a shaved ice stand that was offering free samples, but it was very cold outside and few fans seemed interested. In terms of sit-down spots, there is a Club Lounge for those with Club seats ($40) and Tito's bar for others.

There is a single seating bowl with 22 sections. Above each section is a separate loge section with seats that go for $27 and give you some space. Note that the seats in the upper rows of sections 111-113 are just folding chairs.

One interesting promotion for tonight's game was the Texas Lottery Lucky Row. Each section was assigned a player and if he scored first, a row in that section would win lottery tickets.

Another thing I liked here was having the team store on the concourse itself, providing more space to browse around. Often these are separate spots and can get very crowded before the game.

The path from the dressing room to the ice is not blocked off and fans can stand there as the players walk out onto the ice. A nice touch that cannot be replicated in the NHL, with dressing rooms usually located beneath the seating bowl.

Finally, make sure to pick up your game notes, which are handed out as you enter the seating bowl. A bit of useful info on both teams that makes the game that much more enjoyable.

All-in-all, I was impressed with the Cedar Park Center. The acoustics were great, the fans were loud throughout the game, and I didn't notice a single person leaving early. Which is good, because the game they saw was fantastic.

The Game

The Stars were the top team in the league with 64 points, while the Barons (Edmonton's affiliate) lay 9th in the conference, just behind the Marlies. Observant readers will remember that I saw the Barons play the Marlies in a playoff game in Toronto last April.

Jack Campbell (above) started in goal for Texas. He was the USA junior goalie who won gold in that memorable game against Canada back in 2010. Drafted 11th overall that year, he is in his first full pro season and should be up with Dallas before long. Niko Hovinen (32, below), a Finn who recently was claimed by the Oilers off waivers, was tending net for the Barons in only his 3rd AHL start.

The Stars dominated the first period, peppering Hovinen with 18 shots but only Mike Hedden could beat him, scoring on a power play.

Jonathan Cheechoo, one time NHL leading scorer, now plays for OKC

The Barons found their legs in the 2nd, scoring twice in just over two minutes. Kristians Pelss tied the game with a sneaky screen shot at 14:28. Josh Green was left alone in the slot and had no trouble wristing past a helpless Campbell at 16:57.

In the third, Antti Tyrvainen was on a breakaway, only to be hauled down. A penalty shot was awarded and although the fans didn't like it, the referee was correct. Tyrvainen scored on a low wrist shot (below) and OKC had a 3-1 lead with 12 minutes to go.

But just over a minute later, Hedden scored his second deflecting an Alex Chiasson pass over Hovinen's shoulder, and when Theo Peckham (below) took an interference penalty just after that, the Stars used the momentum to tie the game as Justin Dowling tipped in a cross-ice pass from Toby Petersen.

Neither team could break the deadlock the rest of the way and we went to overtime, which was very fast paced. There were 7 total shots but both keepers were up to the task, sending the game to a shootout. Remember that in the AHL, five attempts are the norm.

OKC went first and Green scored. The next four shooters all failed (two for each team), and then Chiasson potted one for the Stars to tie the shootout at 1. Again, the next four shooters all failed so it was sudden death.

Amazingly, the next eight shooters were unable to score. Pelss came out to take Oklahoma City's 10th attempt and he was stuffed by Campbell (above). That brought big Jamie Oleksiak to the ice for the Stars. Oleksiak, the 14th overall pick in 2011, had just made his first appearance with Dallas (six games in all) and had been sent back down the day before. Not one to mope, he broke in on Hovinen and beat him high over the shoulder to win the game for the home team. Fantastic ending to a fantastic game.

This was a great battle, just back and forth action with some great goaltending, a comeback win for the home team, and 21 penalty shots. In fact, this was probably the best minor league game I have ever seen, which isn't saying much as I've only watched 16 of them.

Notes

I arrived quite early and had to wait around for the press credential in the bowels of the building. While I was there, the Stars warmed up by kicking around a soccer ball (below). A few Cub Scouts were also waiting with their parents for their official passes, and it was fun to see them so amazed by the players.

The game took 2:24. When you compare that to the 2:38 that the previous night's Heat-Thunder game lasted (mostly due to TV timeouts) it shows that hockey gives you much more value for your dollar. There were 65 minutes of game action plus 20 shooutout attempts in less time than 48 minutes of action in the basketball game.

I was in the press box (view from there above) for this game and Craig MacTavish was one of the guests, watching the Oilers' top prospects.

The Austin Toros of the NBDL play here, so I will be back as part of my Quest for 400.

Update, June 16th, 2013: A sad footnote to this game: Pelss' goals was his first and only marker at the AHL level as he died tragically just four months later, while spending the off-season at home in Latvia.

Next Up

It's baseball season! Yes, NCAA baseball started on Friday and the University of Texas Longhorns are hosting Sacramento State in Austin, where it is 19 degrees and sunny. I'll have all the details tomorrow.

Best,

Sean

Texas Triangle Trip Planned

Posted on 20:12 by Unknown

Now that I live in Singapore, getting back to North America is a long and painful process. There are two direct flights (one to LA, one to Newark) but those are not affordable and won't be around into 2014 anyway. Instead, I am forced to transit via my old stomping grounds in Tokyo, which adds at least 8 hours to what used to be a half-day trip, depending on my destination. So it takes a fairly big event to get me back across the Pacific. Next year sees my parents celebrating a milestone anniversary, so I'll be heading home for that. But with no sports left to see in that area of the world, I'll be stopping off in Texas to knock a few venues off the Quest for 400 list. The centerpiece is the NBA All-Star Weekend in Houston, which is probably the second most difficult ticket behind the Super Bowl. Fortunately, there are backup events should I not find my way inside the Toyota Center on February 17th.

I'm also hoping for a trip to New York during that time, which would allow me to see the resurgent Knicks and Brooklyn Nets. All this is still to be confirmed, but who knows, maybe this schedule will inspire some other roadtrippers.

Feb 14 Miami Heat at Oklahoma City Thunder 7:00 (NBA finals rematch)
Feb 15 Oklahoma City Barons at Texas Stars (AHL) 7:30
Feb 16 NBA All Star Saturday at Houston or Sacramento State at Texas (NCAA Baseball)
Feb 17 NBA All Star Game at Houston or UIC at Texas A&M (NCAA Baseball)
Feb 18 Central Baptist Mustangs at New Orleans Privateers (NCAA Basketball) 7:00
Feb 19 Chicago Bulls at New Orleans Hornets 7:00
Feb 20 Oklahoma City Thunder at Houston Rockets 7:00
Feb 21 Florida Atlantic Owls at North Texas Mean Green (NCAA Basketball) 7:00
Feb 22 Houston Aeros at Oklahoma City Barons 7:00
Feb 23 Texas Strikers at Dallas Sidekicks (PASL) 7:00
Feb 24 LA Lakers at Dallas Mavericks 12:00
Feb 27 Golden State Warriors at New York Knicks 7:30
Mar 01 Dallas Mavericks at Brooklyn Nets 8:00
Note

This year, the Central Hockey League went from 16 teams to 10, knocking the 400 venues on the quest down to 394. I added the Appalachian League to bring the total up to 404, but will be playing with other leagues over the next little while to see if I can get it back to exactly 400.

Best,

Sean

Oklahoma City Barons 3 at Toronto Marlies 5 (AHL Western Conference Final, Game 3) - May 21, 2012

Posted on 03:12 by Unknown

There's nothing like playoff hockey on the unofficial first day of summer. In Toronto no less. Yes, although the Leafs and the post-season are not words that have been used in the same sentence since 2004 (unless said sentence includes the word "missed"), their minor league team is playing in the AHL's semi-finals. My visit to Toronto had been planned months ago and I didn't expect it to include a hockey game, but the AHL schedule maker was kind to me, slotting Game 3 on Monday afternoon, the Victoria Day holiday in Canada.

I bought a pair of tickets online as soon as they went on sale and invited my friend Sharpy who was in Toronto for the weekend as well. We showed up an hour before the game, only to be forced into a surprisingly large will-call queue. When I saw two games here a couple of years ago, the attendance was around 2,500 but there were nearly triple the number of fans and the Marlies didn't have the infrastructure to handle them. It took about 15 minutes till I had my tickets in hand, but it didn't bother me as I ended up with great seats, right at centre ice in the first row above an entry gate, so there was nobody in front of me.

The visitors were the Oklahoma City Barons who finished first in the west (the Marlies were a close second) and the two teams had split the first two games in Oklahoma. The Barons came out strong and dominated the first 10 minutes but Ben Scrivens (below), likely the future Leaf keeper, maintained his poise and kept the game scoreless.

Oklahoma City took the first penalty of the game against the run of play and Toronto capitalized when Phil Dupuis scored on a sharp-angled shot that Yann Danis should have stopped. The game remained as such until there were just 5 minutes left in the second. The Marlies added to their lead with another power play marker, this one by captain Ryan Hamilton who tipped home a perfect pass from Jake Gardiner (#19 below in the celebration).

As is typical in Toronto hockey games though, the two-goal lead was quickly erased as the Barons scored on a power-play shortly after Hamilton's goal and then tied the game just a minute later when Chris VandeVelde banged home a rebound. Unlike a typical Toronto game, the team didn't fold. Just 48 seconds after being tied, Matt Frattin intercepted a pass in the slot and beat Danis with a sniper's shot to again give the Marlies the lead heading into the third period.

The Marlies managed to maintain that lead through the first half of the frame, but with just eight minutes left, Magnus Paajarvi beat Scrivens with a wrist shot that again knotted things up. It looked like overtime might be needed which caused us some concern as we had to leave by 7 p.m. which meant we could probably only manage one OT period.

Fortunately, Frattin rendered our concerns mute when, with 2:02 left, he broke in alone and used a defenceman to screen Danis, beating him low to the stick side and sending the 7,327 fans into a wild celebration. Shortly thereafter, Mark Fraser was given a totally bogus tripping penalty and the fans held their collective breath, but Jerry D'Amigo (shooting above earlier in the game) added an empty net shorthanded goal to clinch it as the Marlies won 5-3 to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

A great afternoon that was completely unexpected just a few days ago. It is always fun having new games scheduled when I'm on a sports road trip, but when it is a playoff game featuring the future stars of my favourite team, it brings a new level of excitement that will be hard to duplicate. If the Marlies advance to the finals, they will take on Norfolk. I'm hoping for a game in Toronto on June 7th, when I am stopping over on my way to Atlanta for the Florida State League trip. It will be unlikely, but if it happens, I'll see you there.

Notes

Nazem Kadri started but was hurt in the first period and did not return. He is a key part of the team and the Leafs' future so hoping it is nothing serious.

Oklahoma City is Edmonton's affiliate. Earlier this season I saw the Leafs and Oilers in Edmonton, but since the AHL maintains the "home team wears white" rule, the uniforms in this game were quite similar. The result was similar too, with Toronto winning on a late goal (although the previous one was in overtime). Both Gardiner and Paajarvi played in that game as well.

Best,

Sean

Empire State of Roadtrip

Posted on 18:15 by Unknown

While watching the World Junior Hockey Championship in Buffalo, I saw an advertisement for the WWE Raw show that will take place there on February 28th. I quickly checked the Sabres and Bandits schedules but they weren't conducive to a 3-day sports weekend. Not that I'd be able to attend but I thought my friend Sharpy might be interested. Alas, no go.

When I got back to Japan though, I had a look at neighboring teams in Rochester and Syracuse. It turned out that a simple 4-day road trip was possible once you included those cities. That got me to thinking: how about looking at all the teams in New York? Turns out that there's more than a few sports teams in the Empire State, so once I got checking for possible events, I realized that you could spend nearly 3 weeks on the road watching sports only in New York.

You know of the 3 NHL teams and the Knicks in the NBA, but there's also 5 AHL squads, the ECHL's Elmira Jackals, 2 NLL teams (indoor lacrosse for the uninitiated), 3 franchises in the Federal Hockey League, the Rochester RazorSharks of the Premier Basketball League and a number of college basketball teams of which I considered just 3. All tolled, that's 19 franchises plus the WWE.

So I tried to make a road trip with the usual simple rules: at least one event per day and no home team is seen more than once. Amazingly, you can see each team mentioned above exactly once and finish off in Buffalo for Raw. Here's the schedule:
Feb 9 Abbotsford at Rochester (AHL) 7:05
Feb 10 Connecticut at St. Johns (NCAA Basketball) 7:00
Feb 11 Rome at 1000 Islands (FHL) 7:05
Feb 12 Minnesota at Rochester (NLL) 7:35
Feb 13 NY Islanders at Buffalo (NHL) 3:00
Feb 14 West Virginia at Syracuse (NCAA Basketball) 7:00
Feb 15 Ohio at Buffalo (NCAA Basketball) 7:00
Feb 16 Atlanta at New York (NBA) 7:30
Feb 17 Los Angeles at NY Rangers (NHL) 7:00
Feb 18 Connecticut at Adirondack (AHL) 7:30
Feb 19 Philadelphia at Buffalo (NLL) 7:30
Feb 20 Adirondack at Albany (AHL) 4:00
Feb 21 Florida at NY Islanders (NHL) 1:00
Feb 22 Charlotte at Syracuse (AHL) 7:00
Feb 23 Wilkes Barre/Scranton at Binghamton (AHL) 7:05
Feb 24 Cape Cod at New York (FHL) 7:05
Feb 25 Wheeling at Elmira (ECHL) 7:35
Feb 26 Dayton at Rochester (PBL) 1:05
Feb 27 Cape Cod at Rome (FHL) 2:05
Feb 28 WWE Raw at Buffalo 8:15

There you have it. Now I'll be the first to admit that there's a lot of driving and you would be criss-crossing the state several times (and going through New Jersey and Pennsylvania a lot too). There's only one occasion where back-to-back games are in the same city, which means a lot of checking into and out of hotels. But if you love sports and you love New York, this can't be beat.

I found out about the FHL through Our Sports Central. The FHL is a small league with 7 teams, including a new team in Akwesasne, Ontario. It seems to lie beneath the ECHL, so it's highly unlikely you'll see future NHL'ers here, but it looks like a decent league with a good internet presence. The New York team plays in Brooklyn so check them out when you get a chance.

The PBL is only 3 years old but already has fallen from 13 teams to just 7, so I'm not sure how much longer it will be around.

Best,

Sean

Update (Feb 9th): The FHL should change their name to the F%*ked-Up Hockey League. They are shortening their schedule, so a couple of games later on the roadtrip wouldn't happen. I know, this is just a possible roadtrip and I'm not even going, but it's the principle; road trippers need schedule certainty!

Thanks to Gary and his friend Dom for the info on this.

Rochester Americans 4 at Lake Erie Monsters 3 - January 4, 2011

Posted on 22:30 by Unknown

When I originally planned this trip, I needed to find an event close to Buffalo for Tuesday, the day between the WJHC semi-finals and finals. Turned out that the AHL has a team in Cleveland, the Lake Erie Monsters, and they had a game that evening. Cleveland is just 3 hours from Buffalo, so I decided to add another rink to my roadtrip resume.

Quicken Loans Arena

Located in downtown Cleveland next to Progressive Field, the Q is the home of the Cleveland Cavaliers of the NBA as well. For the AHL, the upper deck is closed off, so I won't bother discussing it in detail here, as I saw the Cavs the following day.

For hockey, there are a number of seating options but it's best to buy the cheapest tickets at $10 and sit where you want. The arena has an interesting set up (as you can see above) in that the lower 10 rows are very flat and completely separate from the club section, which are much steeper and comprise the upper 20 rows in the sections down the sideline. I've never seen so many club seats in a venue, but these offer the best view for hockey.

This Tuesday also saw Ohio State playing in the Sugar Bowl, so there were maybe 500 fans in the rink (despite an announced attendance of 3,034) but the Monsters still put on a great show, including having the players skate out from a large monster head at one end of the arena.

Cleveland actually has a storied hockey history as the Old Barons of the AHL had a semi-dynasty, taking 9 championships over 25 years. Leaf legend Johnny Bower also spent several seasons here. Nice to see these commemorated in the rafters.

The Monsters also have a unique team cleaning the ice during official timeouts: The Mullet Brothers, an imitation of the Hanson Brothers from the movie Slapshot.

The view below is from the $10 seats, it's the last row of section 117 which is actually great for hockey.

I love going to big venues for small teams, it gives me a chance to see things that you might not otherwise get to see. For example, there is a VIP room at one end of the building, this is not accessible during Cavs' games but you can walk through when the hockey is on. However, I wasn't allowed to view the memorabilia, being instructed to walk right through. Nonetheless, here is a picture below.

The Game

Lake Erie's parent club is Colorado, goalie John Grahame, who spent 8 NHL seasons mostly as a backup, is perhaps their most famous player. Rochester is Florida's affiliate and boasts Kenndal McCardle (#22 below), whose lone NHL goal came nearly a year before against Toronto in a game I attended.

The teams traded unassisted goals in the first, but Grahame had trouble in the second, letting in 3 quick goals, starting with a power play marker from Michal Repik (below) at 10:01. Just 23 seconds later, Scott Timmins tipped a Repik pass home, and Jordan Knackstedt added another at 15:14. Despite just six shots on goal during the period, the Americans (Rochester that is, not Team USA!) had staked themselves to a solid 3-goal lead.

Rochester began the third shorthanded, and when Mike Kostka took a slashing penalty just 32 seconds in, the Monsters had a 2-man advantage. With 15 seconds left in the 5-on-3, Travis Gawryletz scored and seven seconds later Ryan Stoa added another. Suddenly we had a game! The 500 fans went wild! But Rochester netminder Jacob Markstrom (making a save below), who won a silver medal with Sweden in the 2009 WJHC in Ottawa, was able to keep the Monsters from tying the game and the visitors escaped with a 4-3 victory.

The power-play goals in the third period meant that everyone got a free chalupa at Taco Bell.

Afterwards Sharpy and I went to a bar to watch a bit of the Sugar Bowl. It was completely dead as most fans decided to stay warm and stay home to watch their Buckeyes. The bar closed before the game even ended (not that surprising when you consider how bloody long college football games can be) and as we made our way home through the deserted downtown streets, we hoped that the visitors winning streak (4-for-4 so far) on this trip would continue tomorrow when we returned to the Q for the Raptors and Cavaliers. Check back tomorrow for a post on that game.

Best,

Sean

Hershey Bears 2 at Charlotte Checkers 1 (SO) - December 10, 2010

Posted on 06:08 by Unknown

After stopping in Fredericksburg, VA for the night, I woke early and made the 6-hour trip to Charlotte, arriving in plenty of time to see the first-year Charlotte Checkers host the defending champion Hershey Bears.

The Teams

The Charlotte Checkers were a franchise in the ECHL last season but the owners bought the Albany River Rats and moved them to Charlotte, taking the Checkers' identity and giving the ECHL franchise back to the league. They are Carolina's AHL affiliate and a couple of their notables are Brett Sutter (recently arrested in Phoenix after an alcohol-fueled altercation and subsequently traded from Calgary) and Ottawa native Jon Matsumoto (in black below), who enjoyed a 10-game stint with the Hurricanes earlier this season.

Hershey has won the past 2 Calder Cups and is Washington's farm team. Their most famous name is Sheldon Souray, who is on loan from Edmonton after being unclaimed on waivers before the season due to a rather bloated contract.

The Checkers play in Time Warner Cable Arena but I'm not going to write about it here as I'm going to see the Bobcats play there tonight. The top deck is closed off so you can't tour the whole thing, as you can see below. As well, one end of the seating bowl is closed off, so it can be difficult to find really good seats here; I found the seats near the top of the seating bowl had views that were partially obstructed by the glass over the benches or penalty box. I moved around a few times before I found a seat that I liked.

The Game

It was "Black-Out Night" and the Checkers were wearing their 3rd jersey, a black number that you can see in the Mastumoto photo above. Fans were encourage to wear their black jersey, but few did.

Former Leaf prospect Justin Pogge was in goal for Charlotte while the Bears started Braden Holtby (making a save below), who was up with Washington for 5 games earlier in the year. Holtby was 4th in the league with a 1.86 GAA.

Hershey got off to a quick start when Andrew Gordon converted a nice pass from Brian Willsie just 1:05 in. Charlotte got it back when Holtby poke-checked Chris Terry, but the puck went right to Jerome Samson who backhanded over the sprawling goaltender and into the net.

After that the goaltenders took over, stopping everything that was thrown at them. Pogge was particularly impressive, facing 49 shots and stopping 48. For the third time on the trip, overtime was played and again nothing was decided. So it was another shootout.

Charlotte went first and Jacob Micflikier deked Holtby but pushed the puck just wide (below).

After Gordon missed for Hershey, Holtby saved Zac Dalpe. Lawrence Nycholat then scored for the Bears. When Zach Boychuk missed for Charlotte, I thought it was game over, but the AHL shootout uses 5 shooters, not 3 as in the NHL, so we kept going. Willsie went for Hershey and converted to make it 2-0. Terry had to score to keep Charlotte alive but Holtby saved it easily and Hershey escaped with the 2-1 shootout victory.

I always find shootouts a bit of a letdown; it is much more exciting when a goal is scored in overtime. This was an interesting game with Hershey clearly a better team but Pogge's play provided his pals a point.

Notes

There were two promotions during the game. The first was "As Seen On TV" where you had a choice of three useless products: a pasta box, bottle tops, and buttons that you can use to make your pants bigger. Given my heavy reliance on fast food during this trip, I chose the buttons.

The second was Teddy Bear night, where fans were asked to bring a teddy bear and throw it on the ice after the Checkers' first goal. Despite being told not to throw from behind the goal, where the netting would prevent the bears from making it onto the ice, several fans did just that, throwing their toys over and over again into the netting. Eventually they figured it out and moved to the sideline where they could reach the ice more easily. This the second time I have seen this promotion and it is always fun for the fans and a great cause.

Next Up

The Boston Celtics, the NBA's hottest team, are visiting the Charlotte Bobcats tonight. I've then got to drive about 6 hours to Jacksonville to see the Raiders and Jaguars do battle at 1 pm the next day. It will be tough with no room for error, so check back Monday to see if I made it.

Best,

Sean

2010-11 Winter Trip Schedule

Posted on 02:36 by Unknown

On August 25th, the AHL finally released their 2010-11 schedule. The reason it took so long is that four teams share arenas with the NBA, who only got their schedule out two weeks before. For sports road trippers, this final release means that it's now possible to plan those winter trips that we started dreaming about months ago.

The World Junior Hockey Championships are taking place in Buffalo over the New Year. With the Winter Classic being held in nearby Pittsburgh on January 1st, and the Penguins opening the Consol Energy Center as well, the centerpiece of the trip was set. The next step was finding games on days in between. Fortunately, hockey is popular in the northeast, and there are some NBA games as well, so it wasn't that difficult.

But that's not all. With my base moving from Ottawa, it also gives me more chances to check out the OHL games in southern Ontario as well as making Toronto a quick getaway destination. So I added a weekend in Toronto as well as some additional junior hockey to complete the package. I'll be spending some family time in Ottawa as well, so that will allow me to catch a Senators game as well as the Gatineau Olympiques.

Wisconsin Basketball Excursion

I also checked to see if I could extend my Minnesota trip to watch an AHL game in Iowa. No such luck. But then I noticed that the Milwaukee Bucks were hosting the three-headed monster from Miami on Monday, December 6. Tickets will be tough to get but it's been nearly 20 years since I saw the Bradley Center, so I think I'll drive across Wisconsin to catch that matchup. Turns out that Marquette University has a home game on the Tuesday while the Wisconsin Badgers are home on Wednesday in Madison, which makes for a convenient stopping point on the drive back.

The Schedule

So with all that said, here is the plan for December and January:
Dec 1 Abbotsford Heat at Hamilton Bulldogs 7:00 (AHL)
Dec 3 Calgary Flames at Minnesota Wild 7:00
Dec 4 Cleveland Cavaliers at Minnesota Timberwolves 7:00
Dec 5 Buffalo Bills at Minnesota Vikings 12:00
Dec 6 Miami Heat at Milwaukee Bucks 7:00
Dec 7 Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders at Marquette Golden Eagles 7:00 (NCAA Basketball)
Dec 8 UW-Milwaukee Panthers at Wisconsin Badgers 7:30 (NCAA Basketball)
Dec 9 Mississauga St. Michael's Majors at Niagara IceDogs 7:00 (OHL)
Dec 10 Denver Nuggets at Toronto Raptors 7:00
Dec 11 Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs 7:00
Dec 12 Barrie Colts at Mississauga St. Michael's Majors 2:00 (OHL)
Dec 15 Montreal Junior at Gatineau Olympique 7:30 (QMJHL)
Dec 19 Washington Capitals at Ottawa Senators 7:05
Dec 28 Owen Sound Attack at Barrie Colts 7:30 (OHL)

Certainly an ambitious schedule and some of the games are going to be tough tickets. It's also my first serious winter roadtrip, and I expect a few storms to cause some problems. But it should be fun so follow along here in just over 3 months.

Best,

Sean

Hartford Wolf Pack 2 at Toronto Marlies 3 (OT) - March 7, 2010

Posted on 21:51 by Unknown

After watching the Leafs in Ottawa the night before, I grabbed a Porter flight to Toronto on Sunday morning and made my way back to Ricoh Coliseum to watch their affiliate take on the Rangers' AHL team, the Hartford Wolf Pack. In a neat coincidence, the Rangers were the other team I had seen in Ottawa.

Ricoh Coliseum with the CN Tower in the background

When I saw the Marlies play last week, Joey MacDonald was the star in shutting down the league-leading Hershey Bears. But he was traded to Anaheim on deadline day, so I didn't expect him to be here. As it turns out though, the Ducks don't have an AHL affiliate of their own, so MacDonald stayed put, but today he was on the bench as James Reimer got the start.

I was also hoping to see Miika Wiikman again. He played for the ECHL's Charlotte Checkers when I saw them in Gwinnett back in January, and had recently been assigned to Hartford. But he was also moved on deadline day, this time to Phoenix, so the Hartford keeper was Chad Johnson.

The Game

Kyle Calder

After the great game last night, today was bound to be a bit of a letdown, and the first two periods were pretty dull. The Marlies' Ryan Hamilton scored on a snap shot late in the first but the shots were just 10-3 Toronto. The teams traded power play goals in the second, with ex-Leaf Kris Newbury tallying for Hartford, but the shots were a woeful 6-5 in Toronto's favour.

Chad Johnson relaxes in net

In the third, Hartford picked it up, and tough guy Donald Brashear (pictured above) tied the game midway through the period. The Wolf Pack pressure continued but Reimer was solid and the game went to overtime. It looked like I would witness another shootout, but with just a few seconds left, Brendan Mikkleson broke in down the right wing and snapped a shot that beat Johnson. There was just 1.1 seconds left, but it was enough as the Marlies won 3-2 in overtime. A great way to end the trip!

One note is that Wolf Pack defenceman Corey Potter also played for the Rangers in Ottawa just a few days ago. He was recalled for a few games while Michael Del Zotto was hurt, but was returned to Hartford once Del Zotto recovered. That's him below battling Andre Deveaux for the puck.

The final score

Thoughts

I now know why the Marlies have such trouble drawing fans. Parking at the CNE is $12 and it takes at least 45 minutes to get out of the parking lot after the game, with just 3, 000 fans. I'm afraid the Ricoh Coliseum, despite being a good arena, is in a bad area for transit and driving. I'm sure this is why Toronto fans would rather just avoid the team.

Thanks to Boyd and his family for joining me today and for the drive back to the airport hotel, which took over an hour due to the traffic getting out of the parking lot.

Next Up

I'm back in Japan for two days. On Thursday, I'm starting a 10-day non-sports trip to Thailand and the Philippines. The blog will be quiet for a while, but check back in late March for news of the summer's plans!

Best,

Sean

Hershey Bears 2 at Toronto Marlies 3 - February 25, 2010

Posted on 05:15 by Unknown

After lunch with an old colleague (Thanks Rob) and a much-needed nap to cure the jet lag, I boarded the streetcar to head over to the Ricoh Coliseum to watch some AHL hockey. The Maple Leafs' affiliate is the Toronto Marlies, and they were hosting Hershey, who are the farm team of the Washington Capitals.

The Arena

The Ricoh Coliseum is located on the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) grounds just west of downtown. Two streetcar routes, including the 509 from Union Station, terminate here at the Exhibition Place stop; from there it's just a minute walk to the main entrance. With a TTC ride costing $3, a group of 3 might be better off driving as there is parking on the CNE grounds.

The arena was built in 1921 and served primarily as an agricultural facility for the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair since then. It didn't become a hockey rink until the Toronto Roadrunners were relocated there in 2003. That team served as Edmonton's affiliate for only a season and after the lockout, the Maple Leafs moved their farm team here from St. John's, Newfoundland. The Marlies have played here since then, even achieving a division title back in 2008.

So that's what a Toronto championship banner looks like

There are two seating levels here - a "platinum" level that comprises the first 7 rows ($38), and the rest of the seats, which are divided into sides ($30) and end zones ($18). There's even a single row known as the red zone which is only $10. All prices are for tickets bought before game day; it's $4 more if you buy on game day. Tickets are also available at the Air Canada Centre. Given the lack of fans there, buy a cheap ticket and sit where you want.

In the main entrance there are several trophies that are presented annually to the Marlies' MVP, best defenseman, etc. It's interesting to note that almost none of the players have made an impact with the Leafs, which illustrates just how poor their farm system is. Having said that, there is a display that rings the ice surface just below the suites which is called "Developing Leafs since 1927" and lists dozens of Leafs who must have played in the AHL.

The concourse offers some displays on the other AHL teams including a great map that is a must for any roadtripper (shown below). Food options are typical and I didn't eat anything while I was there. There was a poutine stand that I'll try on my next visit.

Above the seating bowl is a wide concourse that encircles the rink. I spent the third period wandering around here watching the game from various angles. Seemed to be a few scouts that use this area as it is quite spacious and provides a good view of the ice. There are even TV's at one end; the picture below shows the Marlies scoring their 3rd goal just as the Canadian women were being presented with their Olympic gold medals (below - check out the red light at the far end).

If you enter the club area, you can see the Marlies going to and coming off the ice. Below is distant relative Joey MacDonald smiling after being announced as the 2nd star.

The Ricoh Coliseum is a good place to watch a hockey game. There are no distractions and no bad seats here. Easily accessible by transit and offering reasonably priced tickets, it's a mystery why the Marlies aren't more popular in the so-called "Center of the Hockey Universe".

Fans? Where are you?

The Game

The Bears are the top team in the AHL with a 44-12-2 record while the Marlies lie 6th in the North Division with a 24-27-10 mark. The league actually separates overtime and shootout losses, which I hate, so I've combined them above. Regardless, the Bears had to be favoured in this battle, and they started quickly. A giveaway in the Marlies end was poked by MacDonald right onto the stick of Andrew Joudrey who potted the easy goal for a 1-0 Bears lead just 64 seconds into the contest.

The Marlies fought back and tied the game midway through the period when Kyle Calder scored on a rebound. In the second, Toronto added another when defenseman Juraj Mikus found himself some open ice in the faceoff circle and snapped a shot that beat Bears' keeper Braden Holtby high to the glove side.

Holtby saved this Mikus shot

In the third, Hershey got into penalty trouble and Calder added his second on a 5-3 advantage to make it 3-1 Marlies. The Bears got one back when Steve Pinizzotto tipped home a point shot, but despite a flurry at the end, they could not get the equalizer and Toronto escaped with a 3-2 win.

It was fun to see a Toronto team hold a lead for a change. MacDonald played well and made a great toe save in the final couple of minutes to preserve the win.

MacDonald with another save

The game itself wasn't that exciting, a lot of chippy neutral zone play, but I can't complain - seeing a Toronto team win a game over the best team in the league is not something I'll enjoy often.

Other Thoughts

Where are all the hockey fans in Toronto? The Marlies are averaging just over 3,600 per game and only 2,725 showed up to watch this tilt. Maybe the weather and the women's gold medal game kept some at home, but still, it's terrible that Toronto is smitten only with the Leafs. Tickets here are reasonable and the on-ice product is good; the game crew puts on a good show to entertain fans during the intermissions and time outs. I really don't understand how minor league hockey can be so completely ignored here. Hey Toronto fans: get out and support the Marlies!

Too many empty seats

Next Up

LeBron and the Cavaliers are in town tonight but there are no good tickets and I'm not going to pay over face value from scalpers. With the Canada/Slovakia game starting at 9:30, I might skip the Raptors and make my way to a local for the hockey game instead. Either way, I'll update you tomorrow.

Best,

Sean
