Just a quick post to note that India won the 2011 Cricket World Cup by beating Sri Lanka in the final, scoring 277 runs to beat Sri Lanka's total of 274. Things looked bleak for India early on when Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed for 18 leaving them at 31-2, but the middle of the order responded and staved off a third wicket for some time. Behind Gautam Gambhir's 97 and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's 91, the Indian squad rallied to win with 10 balls to spare. It was India's first World Cup since 1983 and sent a billion people dancing in the streets. The final itself was a great match and would have served as a superb introduction to the nuances of the game. Too bad nobody in North America cared a whit.
The next event is in Australia and New Zealand in 2015. Only the 10 full-member nations of the International Cricket Council will play, which means associate nations such as Canada will not be there. But the quality should be better as these associates rarely put up a good fight (except against England). I'm already thinking it might be a good road trip destination.
Now that the tournament is over, my evenings are suddenly free. For the last seven weeks, I spent most nights at home watching the games on-line. Given that a typical match lasts 7-8 hours, it was a nice way to relax after work. With that distraction no longer available, there's only one thing left to do: head back to the States and watch some baseball. I leave next Tuesday for 3 weeks in California and Nevada, hope you can follow along.
Best,
Sean
